Value Based Payment (VBP) is transforming the way we think about Health Care. It drives us to improve the overall quality of care, focus on the root causes of poor health (Social Determinants of Health), evaluate appropriate levels of care (value of care over volume of care), improve the patient experience, create a mechanism to reinvest in our health care system (shared savings and the opportunity to reinvest in infrastructure, capacity, and delivery), reduce cost and increase efficiency (rewards based on quality improvements and increased efficiency) and enable and encourage innovation (flexibility and cutting edge practices in the system to address root causes of poor health). Care integration and coordination are critical to successful VBP contracts. Strong partnerships between different provider types support population health interventions and address the full spectrum of care for an individual.
